Nisi's debut novel Everfair is a finalist for the 2016 Nebula Award.

Nisi Shawl's story collection Filter House and her novella "Good Boy" were nominated for 2009 World Fantasy awards.

Filter House was one of two winners of the 2008 James Tiptree, Jr. Award. Her co-winner was Patrick Ness's The Knife of Never Letting Go. In a ceremony on May 24, 2009, Nisi was crowned with the Tiptree tiara and serenaded with an Ellen Klages original. She also received a plaque, a check for $1000, a pie, a ceramic sculpture of a duck, a T shirt, and an enamel pin.

Nisi Shawl’s short story collection Filter House was chosen one of the Best Books of 2008 by Publishers Weekly magazine.

Gaylactic Spectrum Awards: Finalist, 2002 for short story "Shiomah's Land."

Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award: Nominee, 2002 for short story "Shiomah's Land."

Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs, City of Seattle: City Artist Program Award Winner, 2004, for excerpt of novel The Blazing World.

Gaylactic Spectrum Awards: Finalist, 2004 for short story "The Tawny Bitch."

Year's Best Fantasy & Horror: Selection, 2005 for "Cruel Sistah."

James Tiptree, Jr. Awards: Special Mention, 2005 for Writing the Other: Bridging Cultural Differences for Successful Fiction (with Cynthia Ward).

The Carl Brandon Society Parallax Award: Shortlist, 2006 for "Wallamelon."

The Carl Brandon Society Kindred Award: Longlist, 2006 for "Matched" and "Wallamelon."
